The pragmatists of the zodiac.

Have you ever wondered, ‘What are earth signs?’. It’s a term that comes up a lot in the realm of astrology, but what exactly is it? Well, the 12 zodiacs are neatly divided into the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Here’s everything you need to know.

What are earth signs?

Each zodiac sign has a corresponding element that reveals a deeper understanding of the traits and characteristics of a sign. Earth signs are made up of the following zodiac signs:

  • Taurus
  • Virgo
  • Capricorn

What are the traits of earth signs?

  • Practical
  • Dependable
  • Patient
  • Disciplined
  • Ambitious
  • Stable
  • Sensual
  • Hardworking

Whereas fire signs tend to be more spontaneous and boisterous, earth signs are the stoic and pragmatic bunch of the zodiacs. However, whilst Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn make up the earth sign trio, they don’t necessarily display their ‘earthy’ wisdom in the same way.

Capricorn

It’s this combination that makes Capricorns natural-born leaders who thrive when it comes to planning and execution.

As an earth sign, Capricorns are grounded (no pun intended), practical, and reliable making them excellent strategists and managers. In love, Capricorns are steadfast and deeply committed partners. Though they don’t open up immediately like a water sign, once they do, you’ll find they’re multifaceted creatures.

Taurus

Element: Earth

Ruling Planet: Venus

Symbol: The bull

Dates: April 20 – May 20

Famous alumni: Adele, David Beckham, George Clooney, Penélope Cruz, Cher, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Queen Elizabeth II, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Pattinson.

Taurus is the second of the earth signs. Taureans are ruled by Venus – the planet of love, beauty. Because of this, Taureans are renowned for their appreciation of the finer things in life. However, like a Capricorn, they are often seen as dependable and practical people who, above all else, value stability and security in all aspects of their lives.

When it comes to matters of the heart, Taureans are loyal, affectionate, and deeply committed partners. You’ll find that unlike a Sagittarius for example, a Taurus will seek long-term, stable relationships. Being an earth sign, they’re more than willing to invest time and effort to build a solid foundation with whomever they choose to let into their little world.

Virgo

Element: Earth

Ruling Planet: Mercury

Symbol: The maiden

Dates: August 23 – September 22

Famous alumni: Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Keanu Reeves, Blake Lively, Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Colin Firth, Sophia Loren, Freddie Mercury.

The third of the earth signs, Virgo is ruled by Mercury – the planet of communication, intellect, and analytical thinking. At times to their detriment, Virgos are known for their meticulous attention to detail and their methodical approach to everything life has to offer.

Being ruled by Mercury, they are highly analytical, practical, and resourceful which is why they’re powers are best put to good use in tasks that require precision and organisation. Like the other earth signs, you’ll find Virgos are exceptionally pragmatic, however Virgos have a natural affinity for helping others. They’re also excellent problem solvers, making them valuable team members and great friends. This mantra extends to their love life where you’ll find that a Virgo in love is dutiful and shows their love through actions and gestures.
