The four-part series chronicles David’s rise from humble beginnings to his global stardom through archival footage as well as through interviews with David, his family, his friends and former football colleagues, including Sir Alex Ferguson.

The documentary, filmed over years, also offers a rare insight into his and his wife Victoria Beckham’s private lives – from keeping their romance a secret in the early days, to navigating the infidelity allegations in 2003, as well as David’s mental health struggles.

Born on May 2, 1975, in London, England, David gained worldwide fame primarily for his exceptional skills as a football player (he’s often regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in the history of the sport, known for his precision passing, remarkable free-kick ability, and impeccable crossing), as well as his striking looks and charismatic personality.

Beyond his sporting achievements, David Beckham’s fame transcended the football pitch. He became a global style icon, endorsing numerous high-profile brands and gracing the covers of multiple magazines.

Plus, David’s marriage to Victoria (a former member of the iconic girl group Spice Girls and who later pursued a successful career in fashion design) further solidified his status as a prominent figure in popular culture.

The couple – often referred to as “Posh and Becks” – have now been married for 24 years and share four children: Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper. Read on to find out everything you need to know about Netflix’s latest documentary Beckham.

The biggest revelations made in Beckham include:

  • David’s mother, Sandra, was seriously concerned when he first began dating Victoria. “We were worried he would lose everything he worked for because football had always come first and then all of a sudden it wasn’t,” she said in Beckham.
  • David and Victoria had to keep their relationship away from the public eye in the beginning. “My manager kept saying, ‘Try and keep it under wraps.’ So we would meet in car parks, and that’s not as seedy as it sounds,” Victoria explains in the docuseries.
  • The most controversial thing to ever plague David’s career was when he infamously got a red card during the 1998 World Cup against Argentina. However, he might have been off his game that day simply because, the night before the match, he found out Victoria was pregnant with their first child… “Oh blimey, you couldn’t have picked a worse time,” David’s dad Ted said in Beckham when talking about Victoria telling David she was pregnant.
  • David suffered from serious mental health issues, including “clinical depression,” following the 1998 World Cup incident.
  • David and Victoria speak openly about the cheating allegations (David supposedly had an affair with his former personal assistant Rebecca Loos) and how it impacted their marriage.
