Gerard Kennedy passes away, aged 93

Two-time Gold Logie-winning TV legend.

Australian television and film icon Gerard Kennedy has died at the age of 93. The celebrated actor reportedly passed away on Monday, 21 April 2025, in a care home in Gosford, NSW.

Born in Perth on 8 March 1932, Kennedy enjoyed an extraordinary career spanning more than five decades, with over 80 credits across television and film. He began his career on the stage before transitioning to the screen, where he became one of the most recognisable faces in Australian drama.

Kennedy rose to prominence in the late 1960s with his breakout role as Frank Banner in the groundbreaking police series Homicide (1967–1968). But it was his performance as Detective Sergeant Frank Banner in Division 4 (1969–1975) that made him a household name. His portrayal of the principled and stoic detective resonated with viewers the most.

For his work, Kennedy was awarded two Gold Logies for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television in 1970 and 1971.

Known for his commanding screen presence and versatility, Kennedy often played characters of authority. His filmography sees detectives, military men, and rugged outback figures. He became synonymous with gritty crime storytelling, with memorable roles in Hunter, Skyways, and The Flying Doctors.

In later years, Kennedy continued to demonstrate his range with appearances in Neighbours, Blue Heelers, Underbelly (2008), the horror film Wolf Creek 2, and the supernatural drama Glitch (2015).
