Is The New Look based on a true story?
Yes, The New Look is deeply entrenched in the real-life fashion feud between Chanel and Dior. When Christian Dior launched his debut collection in 1947, he promptly cemented himself as one of the most important couturiers of the twentieth century. Through revolutionary cut, silhouettes, tailoring and design, Dior’s work celebrated opulence and femininity in a way the fashion world had yet to see.
Serendipitously, a ‘feud’ here in Australia between Sir Frank Packer, owner of Australian Consolidated Press – and publisher of The Australian Women’s Weekly – and the Sydney Morning Herald saw Dior couture leave Paris for Australia. Read more about how The Weekly brought Dior to Australia here.
