On April 12, 2025, the late Shannen Doherty would’ve celebrated her 54th birthday. Sadly, she lost her long battle with cancer in July 2024.
Shannen’s best friend, Sarah Michelle Gellar took to Instagram to pay tribute, writing:
“For as long as I can remember, we have celebrated our birthdays together… This year I will keep that tradition, and celebrate you. I am so glad we were all together on this day last year, not knowing it would be the last like this. Happy Birthday Shannen.”
Following Sarah Michelle‘s lead, we’re honouring the late actress by looking back at our favourite Shannen Doherty movies and TV shows…

Beverly Hills, 90210
Beverly Hills, 90210 is what really catapulted Shannen to fame. In the series, she played the strong-willed, rebellious and fun Brenda Walsh – a twin to Jason Priestley’s Brandon Walsh.
The show follows a group of teens who live in the rich Californian suburb of Beverly Hills and attend West Beverly Hills High, as they navigate typical (and not-so-typical) teen problems: sex, drug abuse, alcoholism, eating disorders, racism, teenage suicide, teenage pregnancy and so forth.

Charmed
For three seasons, Shannen played Prue Halliwelli on Charmed. The series follows the Halliwell sisters, who – once they discover they’re the most powerful witches in the universe – try to balance their normal lives with their supernatural duties.
Where to watch: Paramount+ and Stan.
Stream Charmed on Paramount Plus from $9.99/mth, with a 7-day free trial.

Heathers
In this dark comedy, the four most popular girls at Westerburg High School – three of whom are named Heather – have their lives turned upside down when a new, misanthropic student starts a murderous rampage…
Shannen played Heather Duke in the film, which also stars Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.

Mallrats
Since its release in 1995, Mallrats has become a cult classic. The film follows two teenage boys who decide to spend the day at the mall after both getting dumped by their respective girlfriends.
It may sound like Mallrats has a thin plot but it really doesn’t; it tells a great and hilarious story, and Shannen alone – who played one of the ex-girlfriends – makes it well worth your time.
Where to watch: Rent or buy Mallrats via Amazon.

90210
The reboot of Beverly Hills, 90210 brought back many actors from the original show. Shannen reprised her role as Brenda Walsh, who acts as somewhat of a mentor to the new wave of teens now attending West Beverly Hills High.
Where to watch: Paramount+.
Stream 90210 on Paramount Plus via Apple TV+ from $9.99/mth, with a 7-day free trial.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun
A young Sarah Jessica Parker stars in Girls Just Want to Have Fun as Janey, a teen competing to get cast on a dance TV show. And Shannen had a small but memorable role as the sister of the main love interest.
Camp, funny and cheesy (in a good way!), we promise you’ll enjoy Girls Just Want to Have Fun.
