What is The Artful Dodger TV series about?
In Oliver Twist, Oliver’s friend, the pickpocketing Jack Dawkins — AKA the Artful Dodger — is ultimately caught, tried and sentenced to ‘Transportation to Australia’ for stealing a silver snuff box.
But it’s not clear what happened to the character after this…
The Artful Dodger reveals that Jack is now a young adult working as a surgeon in Australia.

However, the series kicks off when Fagin arrives Down Under. He ensnares Jack in the world of crime once again.
Who stars in The Artful Dodger?
Thomas Brodie-Sangster, of Love Actually and Game of Thrones fame, stars as the titular character in The Artful Dodger.
And David Thewlis — who has starred in the Harry Potter films, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, and The Theory of Everything — portrays the devilish character of Fagin.

Damon Herriman, of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood fame, also stars in the series, as does Miranda Tapsell, known for The Dry, Top End Wedding and The Sapphires.
However, The Artful Dodger’s impressive cast list doesn’t stop there. Maia Mitchell, Huw Higginson, Susie Porter, Damien Garvey, Andrea Demetriade, Jessica De Gouw, Kym Gyngell, Luke Carroll, Tim Minchin, Lucy-Rose Leonard, Jude Hyland, Nicholas Burton, Finn Treacy and Albert Latailakepa star in the show too.
The Weekly was lucky enough to chat with some of the cast at the show’s Season 1 premiere in November 2023.
And David Thewlis told us The Artful Dodger was a professional highlight.

“I’ve enjoyed this experience so much; it was one of the nicest experiences of my whole career.”
Similarly, Susie Porter and Tim Minchin also enjoyed filming The Artful Dodger. They had nothing but praise for their fellow castmates.
“The incredible cast we’ve got, you can’t get better than that,” Susie said.

“Everyone was so much fun… Doing a scene with David Thewlis or Damon Herriman. Getting to work with actors and directors of this quality is joyous,” Tim echoed.
