Hollywood leading man Val Kilmer has passed away aged 65

The acting legend played iconic roles throughout his career including as Iceman in Top Gun and the caped crusader himself, Batman.

On April 1, 2025, Hollywood legend Val Kilmer died at the age of 65 due to complications from pneumonia.

Born on December 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, California, Val’s career spanned over four decades, cementing his status as a Hollywood legend. He was one of the youngest students ever admitted to the Juilliard School in New York at 17 years of age. He has performed on stage, made his Broadway debut in 1983, appeared in music videos, was an avid musician, and also a notable artist.

Val gained fame in the 1980s and 1990s for his versatility, playing everything from action heroes to historical figures. Most notable amongst his repoirtoire were his unforgettable performances as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun (1986), the cocky yet skilled rival of Tom Cruise’s Maverick; as the lead singer of The Doors, Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991) where he sang many of the songs himself; as Batman/Bruce Wayne in Batman Forever (1995); and as legendary gunslinger Doc Holliday in Tombstone (1993), where his line — “I’m your huckleberry” — became the stuff of Hollywood legend and lent Val the title of his memoir.

In recent years, Val has battled health issues, including throat cancer, which affected his ability to speak. Despite this, he made a notable return as Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick (2022). His role was adapted to reflect his real-life condition. He delivers one emotional line of dialogue in the film thanks to the use of AI technology. The production team Sonantic used archival recordings of Val’s voice.

In 2021, a documentary film outlining his life, career, and health issues, Val, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. It included footage shot by Val himself as well as home videos. It offered viewers a never-before-seen intimate look at his personal life, including the childhood death of his brother Wesley and his marriage to actress Joanne Whalley.

Val met Joanne while working on Ron Howard’s fantasy adventure film Willow (1988). They were married for eight years from March 1988 to February 1996. They had two children together, Mercedes and Jack, who is also an actor who narrated his father’s biopic Val.

Mercedes shared the news of her father’s passing on April 1.
