Two European royal houses collided – or, that is, met on opposite sides of the bridge – to celebrate the 25th-anniversary celebration of the Øresund Bridge in Malmo.

King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark met with their Swedish counterparts King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden for the occasion. The bridge itself is part of the Øresund Link, which connects the road and rail networks of the Scandinavian Peninsula with those of Central and Western Europe.

Queen Mary has made an official two-day diplomatic visit to Nigeria, with the Danish Palace releasing images of her recent stay.

Attending without her husband, King Frederik, the Aussie-born royal toured the capital city of Abuja where she was on hand for the launch of the 10 Million Safer Births initiative, of which she is a patron. The project aims to give up 10 million women access to safer childbirth across sub-Saharan Africa.

“For nearly two decades, I’ve been following the global evolution of maternal mortality,” Queen Mary said.

“Despite a global drop in maternal mortality rates since 2000, progress has slowed, and several global crises are now threatening to reverse the curve.

“Every second minute, a woman dies of causes related to pregnancy or childbirth. Every fourteen seconds, a newborn suffers the same fate. I have often been left with a sense of wonder: Why is it so hard to make progress on an agenda so basic and human?”

Currently in the initial stage, 10 Million Safer Births will take place in Nigeria, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

King Frederik celebrated his 57th birthday at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. During the celebrations, the royal family, including his mother Queen Margrethe, his wife Queen Mary, and their children Princess Isabella, who recently celebrated her 18th birthday, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. Unfortunately, his son, Crown Prince Christian, was not in attendance, likely because he is continuing his Lieutenant’s training.

The Danish royals erupted in giggles when one of their two border collies, Grace and Coco, joined them on the balcony.

May 14, 2025, marked Queen Mary and King Frederik’s 21st wedding anniversary.

Sadly, the couple had to spend the day apart; duty calls, as they say.

Mary also held a meeting at the Mary Foundation, her eponymous charity which was founded in 2007 and tackles several issues like bullying, domestic violence and loneliness.

Furthermore, Frederik presented the Danish Academy of Science’s gold medal to this year’s recipient; Frederik is one of the institution’s patrons.

The then-Crown Prince Frederik and then-Mary Donaldson tied the knot in May 2004 at Copenhagen Cathedral after four years of dating.

January 6, 2025

Continuing with the New Year relay events, King Frederik and Queen Mary hosted the Royal Life Guards, Officers Corps of the Guardhouse Regiment, and the Supreme Court Judges for a celebratory reception in the Knights Hall at Christiansborg Palace.

Their Majesties will continue to host multiple diplomats over the coming days in recognition of the new year.

From the first day of January, the Danish Royals hold the traditional New Year relay in Amalienborg. Furthermore, this year marks Queen Mary and King Frederik’s first time hosting, and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Christian will attend.

The first event recognises the Order of the Elephant, one of Denmark’s oldest and most prestigious knighthoods.

King Frederik and Queen Mary took to Instagram on December 19 to share how they had decorated their home for Christmas. The royal couple shared several pictures of their tree, which featured a David Bowie ornament, a horse ornament, and, in a clear nod to Mary’s motherland, a kangaroo ornament. They also shared a glimpse of their wreath-adorned front door, their garland-covered fireplace mantel and a sweet reindeer figurine.

Queen Mary attended the WeShelter food club event on December 17. Her Majesty is a patron of the organisation, which has been helping vulnerable individuals since 1893.

During the visit, for which Mary donned a very festive Christmas jumper, she met with volunteers at the food centre and helped prepare a Christmas meal.

New official civilian portraits of King Frederik and Queen Mary were released on November 22, 2024.

The portraits were taken by photographer Steen Evald in Frederick VIII’s Palace in Amalienborg. They will now be used by the Royal House in connection with official engagements, visits and special events as well as the protections of the Royal Couple.

November 3, 2024

After being spotted in Sydney, Australia, on October 30, 2024, Queen Mary and Princess Josephine arrived back in Denmark in early November.

The mother-daughter duo then attended the annual Hubertusjagt Drag Hunting Event in Dyrehaven on November 3. The event, which includes almost 200 riders, is held every November at the Jægersborg deer park. It is a recreation of the par force hunt and is attended by numerous spectators, including a handful of royals.

Queen Mary and King Frederik attended an official dinner for the 25th anniversary of the Nordic Embassies in Berlin on October 21, 2024. The evening was dedicated to the heads of state of Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

In addition to the Danish Royal couple, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden, Icelandic President Halla Tomasdottir and her husband Björn Skulason, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and his wife Suzanne Innes-Stubb, and Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit of Norway were also in attendance.

Queen Mary had a very busy day on September 23. In the morning, Her Majesty attended the National Conference for Health Nurses with the Mary Foundation.

The conference’s theme was “violence in the family” and was officially opened with a speech from Her Majesty. Mary has sat as chairman of the foundation since 2007.

In the afternoon, Mary attended the Opera, where she honoured seven teachers with the 2024 Teaching Award. This award is given to teachers who excel in their profession.

September 20-22, 2024

September 20, 2024, marked a first for Queen Mary; she began acting as regent for the first time since assuming the title of Queen.

In Denmark, a regent is a person who temporarily rules on behalf of the monarch when the monarch is unable to perform their duties due to absence or incapacity.

And as King Frederik went abroad from September 20 to September 22, Mary stepped up!

In honour of their nephew’s birthday, Frederik and Mary shared a sweet family photo on Instagram.

“His Excellency Count Nikolai has a birthday and is turning 25 today,” the royal couple wrote.

The King and Queen wrapped up their four-day summer voyage aboard the royal yacht Dannebrog by taking to Instagram to pen a heartfelt message.

“Our country has a lot to offer and we have enjoyed experiencing culture and nature, communities and professional skills on our own,” it read.

“Thank you to everyone who spontaneously and planned shared personal stories, experiences and talents, and to everyone who prepared, held and participated in the past four days. We are deeply touched and filled with good experiences.”

Just before the 2024 Paris Olympics kicked off, Frederik and Mary took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the Danish Pavilion on the Champs-Élysées.

It was especially sweet considering that the couple first met at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The royal couple celebrated their eldest child, Crown Prince Christian, graduating from high school on June 24, 2024.

“Every year around midsummer, students hatch all over the country. Today it was His Royal Highness the Crown Prince’s turn to experience the very special feeling of freedom that the student cap gives,” Frederik and Mary wrote on Instagram.

On May 26, Frederik turned 56. But rather than receiving a gift, he gave Mary one.

The King awarded his wife with the rarely bestowed honour of the Grand Commander’s Cross of the Dannebrog.

Currently, only seven living titleholders have received it.

The first official portrait of Frederik and Mary since they ascended the throne was released in late April.

In the portrait, both Frederik and Mary wear the Order of the Elephant on chains, and Mary wears an emerald tiara.
