Not everyone can pull off a great hat moment like Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. The Dutch monarch has been serving up iconic, colourful, and creative hat fashion throughout her time in the public eye.

We’ve rounded up our favourite looks, and it’s clear that the royal has her favourite designers and outfit pieces that are recycled from her wardrobe again and again. We love a frugal fashionista.

And so, in no particular order, here are Queen Máxima’s best hat moments.

Olive a hat moment

April 22, 2025

Queen Máxima attended the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden to visit the “25 Years of Archaeological Finds” exhibition in this olive-hued ensemble.

To the exhibition, she wore a fabulous ribbon skirt from Austrian designer Lena Hoschek. To accessorise, she wore a wide-brimmed olive green hat, with a Maison Natan blouse and matching clutch, and Gianvito Rossi pumps.

This particular hat shows up a lot in the royal’s style repertoire. Clearly it’s a favourite of the Queen’s!

Canary and cranberry

April 16, 2025

For once, the hat takes a backseat when compared to the other accessories on display with this incredible look from Queen Máxima.

Front and centre is the iconic feathered necklace in a rich canary-yellow colour with matching beaded earrings. It is creatively contrasted with the deep cranberry red silk-satin structured dress. And while the hat might not be the first thing you notice, you do make note of it.

The dark cranberry velvet felt wide-brimmed Fabienne Delvigne hat has made numerous outings on the royal, clearly another one of her go-tos.

Monochrome and textures

April 15, 2025

Queen Máxima loves to play with textures and colours. In this outfit, she opted for a black wide-brimmed hat.

She also chose a crepe skirt from House of Natan and Gianvinto Rossi black leather pumps — both favourite designers of the monarch. Máxima also wore a vintage Christian Dior jacket. She previously wore the statement jacket to Prince Friso and Mabel’s wedding in 2004. She finished the look with leather gloves and pearl drop earrings.

Butterflies in Emmen

April 27, 2024

Technically a “head-piece”, but we couldn’t not include this stunning look in our Queen Máxima hat fashion round-up.

To celebrate King Willem-Alexander’s birthday in 2024, the Queen paid homage to the famed butterfly house in Emmen. The city was hosting the birthday celebrations.

It is a custom silk headpiece which she matched with a green lace dress, cream gloves, and a simple cardigan.

Code red

April 25, 2024

Bright red was the name of the game for this look. Queen Máxima wore the look to attend the opening of the social restaurant A Beautiful Mess. The restaurant works in conjunction with the Refugee Company Foundation to support refugees.

To the event, she dressed head to toe in bright red! She chose another Natan design dress and Gianvito Rossi pumps matched with a Sophie Habsburg clutch.

The hat, which attempted to fly off in the wind, is by Fabienne Delvigne, another favourite of the monarch’s.

Country flair

May 16, 2023

Queen Máxima was emulating the great Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh in this elevated straw hat look to attend the opening of the Van Gogh Village Museum.

The royal wore a powder blue ruffled midi dress by Claes Iversen, light brown suede pumps from Gianvito Rossi, a matched suede clutch from House of Natan and a long brown cost from Natan as well. The Fabienne Delvigne hat made the look in our opinion.

Fantastic florals

July 6, 2021, June 18 2019

We all know what it’s like to have a go-to outfit for an event. For many of us, it’s the perfect midi-dress with pockets that you can dress up or down. For Queen Máxima, we reckon it’s this striking floral headpiece with delicate pink notes and matching long-sleeved beige dress.

She wore it first for her debut at the Royal Ascot in 2019, where she rode in the same carriage as Queen Elizabeth II.

On an angle and on point

April 8, 2014

Who doesn’t love a matching ensemble? This quirky, angled hat does have a touch of Cheshire cat about it. However, with her matching coat and broad grin, Queen Máxima makes it work.

Ladies in Black

November 8, 2015

A solemn event still calls for fashion, and the Buenos Aires-born royal was up to the task.

In a signature wide-brimmed black hat from her favourite Fabienne Delvigne and an understated wool coat, Queen Máxima was suitably stylish for the National Service of Remembrance. She and the then-Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Catherine of Wales, even shared a chinwag after the ceremony.

Gold standard

March 21, 2018

Eagle-eyed royalists will recognise this dress from another look above. However, this time she assessoried with a 1920s style turban hat in golden velvet. She has worn this turban several times. It adds a touch of old Hollywood glamour to every look!

Pretty in pastel

June 17, 2019

Queen Máxima opted for a soft pastel look, with a blush pink tuxedo dress with an oversized belt and cape detail. For her headwear, the royal opted for a pinkish straw side hat with fabric flowers blossoming out of the side. It almost looked as if she was wearing a floral bouquet on her head!

Lady in Red

November 24, 2022

Who doesn’t love a monochrome look? Well, Queen Máxima certainly does! The monarch dressed head to toe in rich red hues from the deep wine-red cape, matching hat (of course), leather gloves and heeled boots and high-necked red dress.
